It’s hugely disappointing that anyone who is part of the LGBTQ community would disrespect Amber’s (or Angelina, Anna, Evan or any one else’s) choice for her own life when it’s exactly what we’re demanding for ourselves.
Equality is the ability to possess what and who we want, and that extends itself to bisexual women (and men).
’ I look at speeches by Martin Luther King and I cry when I read the story of Rosa Parks at the back of the bus, and I can’t help but think if I was in that era what side of history would I be on?
Would I be marching on the side of equality or would I be one of these horrible people spreading hate and bigotry?
As Wanda Sykes once joked, “…being an African-American celebrity who’s out, it was like they started treating me like a unicorn. Queen Latifah is one of the most successful and well-recognized black women in America, coming off of her own talk show, producing films with her aforementioned production company, starring in major films, releasing albums and lending her face to brands like Cover Girl. Although Bessie Smith was out to her close friends and family, her sexuality was likely not discussed or acknowledged as bisexual by audiences.
At a time when there are still public figures who live inside a glass closet, Amber is an actress who came out when she was still coming up in the industry, and has continued to be a positive, affirming queer person.
Despite her publicist’s attempts at having us taking it down and obvious want of keeping Amber in the closet, the actress has been out and proud about her dating both men and women, and has reiterated the sentiment even while dating LGBT ally Johnny Depp.
So why do we still get these kinds of comments whenever we write about her?
Sykes said in her speech that she believes passing Proposition 8 will ultimately backfire for those who are against gay marriage.“They pissed off the wrong group of people,” she told the crowd. We are so together now and we all want the same thing and we shouldn’t have to settle for less.
